Evaluating Eye Health and Interest in Eye Health Care of Middle-Aged Adults

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose : This study aimed to examine characteristics related to the eye health of middle-aged adults and understand their subjective awareness and interest in their health and eye health status.
Methods : This study included 199 middle-aged adults aged 40 years or older who responded to an online survey between March 1 and April 30, 2023. The survey consisted of 11 items: health-related characteristics (8), subjective health status (1), subjective eye health status (1), and interest in eye health care (1). Higher scores of items on subjective health status, subjective eye health status, and interest in eye health care indicate better health status and higher interest in eye health care.
Results : The subjective health, eye health, and interest in eye health care of all participants were 3.20, 2.78, and 3.31, respectively. The subjective health, eye health, and interest in eye health care of the group that was perceived to have eye health issues were 2.99 (significantly lower), 2.37 (significantly lower), and 3.40 (significantly higher), respectively (p<0.050). Those who had lower subjective eye health scores and higher interest in eye health care tended to visit an optician more recently and more frequently (p<0.010). The group that was perceived to have eye health issues was significantly more interested in eye health care (p<0.050).
Conclusions : This study revealed that individuals' eye health awareness was associated with their subjective health scores and that vision correction status and regular visits to an optician were the primary methods of eye health care. Therefore, it is necessary to advocate the need for eye health care for eye diseases that can be caused by aging and presbyopia by developing programs that can improve subjective awareness of eye health and promote interest in eye health.
